Cordage is already useful for many ordinary camp jobs. The Exotac FIRECORD adds another role inside the cord instead of attaching a separate tinder container.
Exotac describes 550 FIRECORD as paracord with a built-in tinder strand. The red inner strand can be removed for fire-starting preparation while the remaining cord construction provides the ordinary cordage role.
Two Supplies in One Length
- Paracord format: Useful where ordinary compatible cordage is needed.
- Internal tinder strand: A separate material inside the cord.
- Deployable backup: Cut and prepare only as directed.
Think About Where You Put It
A lanyard or spare cord length may be a sensible place for a backup tinder supply. It is less convenient if the only available cord is holding something important together. I would avoid a plan that requires dismantling the whole shelter just to get to the tinder.
The cord also needs to remain clearly identified. If several types of paracord are mixed together, it may be difficult to remember which one contains the special strand. A small marked supply can be easier to manage.
Tinder Is Not Ignition
FIRECORD gives you material intended to help receive a spark or flame. You still need an appropriate ignition source, suitable fuel, and practice preparing the strand. I would try the process before counting it as a useful emergency option.
The strength designation also doesn't turn this into climbing or life-support equipment. Use cordage only for jobs supported by the product and appropriate to its construction.
I would compare FIRECORD for someone who already carries spare cord and wants a little more utility from that space. A dedicated tinder pouch may be quicker to access for routine fires. The best case for FIRECORD is backup material that travels with an item you were going to carry anyway.
