PREPAREDNESS / BUYING GUIDE

Emergency Blankets, Bivy Bags, and Tarps

These products serve different roles. Match coverage, packed size, and setup needs to your plan.

Compare the Shelter Format

A flat blanket is flexible but has open edges. A bivy-shaped product surrounds more of the body. A tarp needs a way to suspend and secure it. Compare the actual dimensions and read how the maker intends it to be used.

Keep Layers in Mind

Weather protection includes the clothing you wear and the place where you shelter. Choose outer layers that fit over your regular clothes. Think about dry storage for spare clothing and the amount of space available in your kit.

Check Bulk and Durability

A thin reflective blanket packs differently from a wool blanket. A home bin and a vehicle kit may accept more bulk than a small daypack. Look at material, seams, reinforcement, and the maker’s guidance on reuse.

Practice the Setup

Try a tarp or emergency shelter in ordinary conditions before packing it away. Learn what cordage, anchors, or accessories you need. Keep the instructions and inspect the gear after use.

Put the Plan Before the Purchase.

Choose one gap in your supplies, compare suitable options, and learn the equipment before you store it.
